Overview

Fabulous 2-day backcountry loop of Canyonlands National Park.

An incredible adventure along cliff edges of countless massive canyons in the shadow of towering buttes and unique rock formations. We prefer to take 2 days to complete this trip. Day-use permit required if driven in one day. Available online 24 hours in advance or first come, first served at visitor center. Limit of 50 vehicles per day. Additional permit required to camp overnight. Read page 14 for booking tips. Carry lots of water. No gas or services. A very popular bike route. On the trail, no fires or pets (even if left in vehicle). No ATVs, UTVs, or OHVs (licensed or not). Licensed motorbikes are allowed. Park entry fee required.

Most of the route is easy; but a few steep, rocky spots require 4x4 high clearance. The most challenging spot is a narrow shelf road that climbs the Murphy Hogback. We once encountered a rock slide here that completely blocked the road, and we had to turn back. Always call ahead for conditions or check at visitor center.

It is correct that you should do the trail in 2 days if possible in the fall or spring. A one-day trip should begin as early as possible.
A stock Jeep is fine, but a stock 4 x4 suv needs high clearance.
Between waypoints 5 and 6- there are shelf roads with no room to pass. There are also Lots of blind curves. Great road!

When you are ready for some solitude and beautiful scenery, this is your trail. It is best done over two days with a night spent camping. The night time sky is a real treat on a camp-out on the White Rim. Reservations for camp sites open 4 months to the day ahead of time. I suggest planning ahead and staying up late to try to book the camp sites you want.

Drove with 2 stock Jeep Wranglers. There are a couple spots with a large step that we scraped, and several steep spots we needed 4WD Low, but otherwise an easy road. Dry when we did it mid August so there were many spots with sand which I can guess will turn to deep mud when wet. Also temps were around 100, no shade. We brought a large tarp and strung it between the 2 jeeps for shade. I would not do this trail alone, there is little to no cell service.

I have driven this 3 times in stock Chevrolet Tahoe. Drove it in 1 day each time. Great views and drive. Probably would have enjoyed more if done in 2 days.
