Overview

Camp on the spectacular north edge of the Grand Canyon.

The overlook’s 3,000-ft. vertical drop is awe-inspiring. Campground is in a beautiful red rock setting a short distance from canyon rim. An advanced permit is required to camp. No fires, no water, leash pets. Only street-legal vehicles are allowed in park. Maximum vehicle length 22 ft. Add a fun, more difficult side trip through Hack Canyon, open to non-street-legall OHVs.

Trail Ratings Defined

Moderate. When dry, it’s a fast and easy road to Waypoint 06. After that, a twisty road enters red rock terrain with increasingly larger rock ledges. High clearance needed in campground and at the end near the overlook. Summer monsoonal rains and winter snows create unexpected, impassable quagmires. Weather can change quickly. Tow service can cost up to $2,000.

As of early May a permit and fee system is being considered for Tuweap/Toroweap due to crowding, etc. https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/tuweep.htm

As far as I know, a reservation is now required for the few campsites there are. So don’t just head out that way without the backcountry permit/reservation.
