Overview

High mountain SUV tour.

This trail doesn’t seem like much at first, as it climbs a very wide maintained road to a large, active quartz mine. After it passes through the mine, however, it becomes a narrow rough mining road with great views. Not recommended for oversize vehicles; however, we passed a stock, full-size Suburban going up the steepest part of the trail just west of Waypoint 04.

Trail Ratings Defined

Most of the trail is easy, but novice drivers might find the narrowness of the road intimidating near the top. The roughest section is between Waypoints 03 and 04. Experienced drivers in a smaller 4x4 SUV with low range should have no trouble.

My daughter and I ran this trail on 8/28/18 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The route diverts to the right at a very steep angle at the quartz mine and I missed it at first. I was afraid the road was closed! We actually had lunch right at the bottom of the quartz mine as it blocked the wind. Just after the quartz mine the road is VERY steep and rocky and I was thankful for 4-lo. After that, the road climbs quickly and in scenic fashion to above 12k feet. The views are spectacular! Much of the descent was on a very rocky (big rocks) road that was extremely rough to drive on. We stopped for lots of pictures thus the the whole route took us about 2.5hrs. The trail is more easy than moderate but definitely has big and steep drop-offs not for the faint of heart.
