Overview

An extension of Trail#29. Accesses an optional difficult hill climb called “Cliffhanger 2.0.”

This trail is an extension of Switzerland Trail #29. It is described here separately because it includes difficult terrain. After 2 miles, the easy portion of the route that follows the historic railroad grade becomes impassable. At Waypoint 03, you’ll bear left up a steep, rocky hill and finish the route on more difficult F.S. Road 461. The northern route also includes an optional side challenge known as Cliffhanger 2.0. It ends at a high camp spot with an outstanding panoramic view. We saw unlicensed vehicles using the trail despite the fact that it is a county road. Small parking areas at both ends of trail. Open
all year, weather permitting.

Trail Ratings Defined

Difficult. The flat portion of the route is easy; however, it is narrow in spots with scratchy tree branches. Road 461 is steep and rocky in places, but a high-clearance, aggressive SUV can do it with an experienced driver. Cliffhanger 2.0 (not to be confused with better-known “Cliff Hanger” in Moab) is extremely steep with loose, moderate sized rock. Aggressive tires, lockers, and very high clearance are recommended.

On Switzerland North at 40.05714, -105.48271 there is a nice loop road leading to a great view and lunch spot. Not sure if dispersed camping is allowed here but if so, it would be a great overnight spot.
