Easy, scenic forest road descends from I-70 near Vail Pass.

Views of Mt. Holy Cross from the west side of Shrine Pass. Short walk to observation deck (handicap accessible). Popular area for mountain biking and hiking. Snow can block road even in July. Great wildflowers and fall color. MVUM not issued at time of this writing, but plans show licensed vehicles only. Check final MVUM.

Trail closed due to snow.

I drove this trail on June 26, 2018. Signs on the road indicate that unlicensed vehicles are allowed on this road for its entire length. The book incorrectly states they are not. At the time we wrote the book, the MVUM had not been issued and there was no way to know.

Tried both ends of Shrine today. The Vail Pass side was clear to 11,000 feet where extended snow fields begin to block the road. The Red Cliff side gate was still closed and locked.

Shrine open the full length. Looks like some trail repairs were done on the Red Cliff side.
