Overview

Narrow shelf road climbs high above tiny town of Montezuma.

Stunning panoramic views, including Grays Peak and Breckenridge Ski Area. Top is high enough to look down on Webster Pass and Red Cone Peak. Watch for hikers.

Trail Ratings Defined

A tippy, narrow, ledge road that climbs steeply up many switchbacks to a very high altitude. Mildly rocky in spots but suitable for stock, high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive SUVs. Low-range gearing a must. May be intimidating to novice drivers.

Beautiful Trek today. Steady simple progress, insane views at top. Stock Wrangler JK sport, Duratrac 17s. Opted out of last 500 ft to top. Gets very very narrow and steep and it was stormy n wet today.

Summit is accessible for a stock Rubicon. A couple of difficult, rocky spots but well worth the commitment. Stunning views of Grays & Torreys. Three-county vantage point. We were the only ones on the mountain this Tuesday afternoon.

This trail has gotten much rockier above timberline and we are now rating the upper part “difficult.” Also, the road is now closed to unlicensed vehicles. It shows on the MVUM as a county road and is a little shorter than what we show on our map, however, the road itself has no sign that marks the new end of the road.

8-8-2023 we did the trail to the top. It is steady uphill, shelf road switchback after switchback for most of the trail. Above tree line the shelf roads get narrow and sometimes a bit tippy but nothing difficult. When you think you are at the top there is a small parking spot to the left, if you continue it gets very narrow and rocky for a few hundred yards but beyond this there is another place to turn around to go back. It is better to park at the first parking spot and walk the rest if you wish, or just walk up to the peak not that far above you. There are good views in all directions from here.
