Overview

Gorgeous SUV loop passes through historic town of Gothic.

A beautiful, stressless drive. In season, wildflowers are everywhere. Limited designated camping along road in addition to fee F.S. campgrounds. Washington Gulch, F.S. 811, is a beautiful alternate way to reach Paradise Divide. Northern portion of Gothic Road is closed between March 1 and June 30 depending on snow and mud conditions. Unlicensed vehicles can ride to Marble but are only allowed on roads in the national forest.

Trail Ratings Defined

Slate River Road is a wide graded road. As it climbs towards Paradise Divide, it becomes a narrower shelf road, but there is still plenty of room to pass. Any high-clearance vehicle can reach Schofield Pass via Gothic Road when everything has dried out. In early summer, however, Gothic Road can be blocked by snow below Emerald Lake. Call ahead to find out if road is passable.

A little slick today due to snow and melting snow. Wouldn’t do it in a two-wheel drive right now.

Trail is very easy, did not need 4WD. A small amount of snow at the top. The aspen leaves were absolutely stunning. If you are in the area at the time of the leaves changing, make sure you drive Kebler pass.
