Overview

Scenic loop with side trips to Honanki and Palatki Indian Ruins.

Here’s a short, fun backcountry loop you can add to a visit to the Honanki Indian Ruins. While there, you can also turn right at the start to visit the Palatki Ruins. Both trips feature beautiful red rock scenery and impressive Indian cliff dwellings and are open 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. seven days a week. You’ll need a Red Rock Pass to park at the sites. As you drive north on well-traveled F.S. 525, you’ll see many dispersed camp spots and fun side roads for non-street-legal vehicles.

Trail Ratings Defined

Most of the loop is easy, but a couple of steep, rocky sections require a moderate rating. Most stock SUVs with high ground clearance can do it. Skid plates will help.

The trail is open in full. At waypoint 02 the route is somewhat confusing. There is a road closure sign pertaining to a side route, but the Outlaw trail continues across the parking lot by the restrooms!

Really fun trail with great views. Make sure to allow some time to stop at the Honanki Indian Ruins (probably need 30 to 60 minutes). Ran this in October 2023 with a 2020 4Runner TRD Pro (32 inch tires, 2" lift) and didn't really have any issues. Used low range through the OHV section and definitely had some pretty big rocks and ledges to navigate through, but think I maybe got a skid plate just barely once. Take your time and enjoy it; majority of it is pretty easy honestly other than the few more challenging sections.
