This scenic loop takes you down the center of Movie Flat, then part way up Mount Whitney to a beautiful picnic area and water falls. We recommend you take a self-guided auto tour on a network of dirt side roads through Movie Flat (see detail map). See unusual rock formations and unique arches; many have been famous backdrops in western movies. “Movie Road Self-Guided Tour” booklet available at Chamber of Commerce and Film History Museum in Lone Pine. Also available as PDF online.

This trail is easy. And do-able for passenger cars with a decent ground clearance. The area has a fascinating history for movie buffs. The mountain views and rock formations are spectacular in every direction. We did this trail in mid-October and it was a comfortable temperature. I imagine that it gets quite hot in the summer.

Truly magnificent views -- outta this world (IMHO). Glad I drove it. Oh yeah, easy peasy drive - we saw a front drive Corolla hoofing it. :-)

Fairly easy drive, dirt and gravel. We drove it in a stock BMW with maybe 5" ground clearance; main issue was stiff run-flat tires going over tracked vehicle rutting. Lovely views.
