Trail Ratings Defined

We drove the trail after maintenance and found it steep in a few places but easy for a high-clearance 4x4 SUV with low range. Deterioration of trail over time could result in more challenging conditions. F.S. 189 is muddy in the spring and does not open until June 30 according to MVUM.

I drove this trail on June 28, 2018. The steep spot between Waypoints 02 and 03, shown on the map, has gotten very chewed up. Because of this short section, this trail now requires a “Moderate” rating. In addition, the last sentence in the “Getting There” instructions is misleading. There is not really a bridge across the Arkansas River—it’s more of a raised road with guardrails.
