Easy forest road climbs to views atop mountain near Leadville.

A quick, easy getaway just north of Leadville. Mount Zion is about two thirds of the way up the trail and has distant views of Leadville and Turquoise Lake. Mount Zion is barely noticeable as you drive across it. Best views are at end of road near Buckeye Peak.

Rating

Moderate
Trail Ratings Defined

We drove the trail after maintenance and found it steep in a few places but easy for a high-clearance 4x4 SUV with low range. Deterioration of trail over time could result in more challenging conditions. F.S. 189 is muddy in the spring and does not open until June 30 according to MVUM.

Ran this yesterday. The 4×4 road ends about .75 miles from your waypoint 4 at GPS position: 39.32980333, -106.26073333 I have a photo of the closure sign, and if you examine the National Geographic Trails Illustrated map, you can see the road ends there…  Sadly, though the closure is clearly marked, we observed a 6 pass Polaris SxS go on up the trail anyway. I drove this trail on June 28, 2018. The steep spot between Waypoints 02 and 03, shown on the map, has gotten very chewed up. Because of this short section, this trail now requires a “Moderate” rating. In addition, the last sentence in the “Getting There” instructions is misleading. There is not really a bridge across the Arkansas River—it’s more of a raised road with guardrails.
