Overview

This leg of the Great Western Trail climbs from valley to forest.

This trail starts in low, open grasslands with distant views of the Vermillion Cliffs. You will see plenty of great dispersed camping spots as you head north on F.S. 225 climbing over 2,500 ft. towards the Kaibab Plateau. This trail is part of the Great Western Trail and is marked as such with brown Carsonite posts. Watch for them to stay on course. Combine this trail with Orderville Canyon, trail #7, to continue on the Great Western Trail and make a long overland trip.

Trail Ratings Defined

Most of this trail is easy, but it has one steep section with a moderate rating. Stock SUVs can do it, but you’ll want skid plates and high ground clearance. The trail is faint between Waypoints 02 and 03 for a couple of miles; just look for the two-track road. More difficult when wet.
