Hotel Gulch, Winding Stairs Loop

Location Colorado Springs, CO

Length 13mi

Vehicle Types

Overview

Head east from Hwy. 67 into forest on easy SUV road.

Hotel Gulch is a handy and quick way to reach Rampart Range Road from Highway 67. Unlike Rampart Range Road, Hotel Gulch is not graded and remains an interesting and pleasant drive. It ends near an easy loop that circles around Ice Cave Creek Road and Winding Stairs Road. The three roads combined make a fun easy drive. To add more fun to the trip after completing the loop, consider heading south on Rampart Range Road to Garden of the Gods Park. (See directions for Trail #90 in this book.)

Easy
Trail Ratings Defined

Much of Hotel Gulch is a wide single lane with just a bit of twotrack in places. Parts of the loop route are graded, but the east end is twisty with several mildly steep sections. SUVs with moderate clearance OK.

Hotel Gulch dead ends at Rampart Range Road. Side/Sides and ATV's are not allowed on Rampart, so making the right turn on Rampart and over to the left turn on Ice Cave Creek is an illegal action. We have camped in this area for decades and have been ticketed twice for trying to complete that loop.
