Glamis, Oldsmobile Hill, Sand Highway

Selected offroad routes at “Glamis” Imperial Sand Dunes.

These two routes serve as an introduction to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. Route A takes you to Glamis and the north central dunes area, including Oldsmobile Hill. Route B traverses the entire western edge of the dunes. Open to licensed and green-sticker vehicles. Fee area, permit required. Safety flags required. Obey all posted regulations. Camping is first-come, first-served. Supplies and gas available at Glamis Beach Store at premium prices.

Conditions vary depending on time of year and wind conditions. Routes shown here are easy to moderate except if you attempt to drive up larger dunes, like Oldsmobile Hill. Use extreme caution on steep slopes. Downwind side of dunes can be extremely soft, where it’s easy to get stuck or even roll over. Route-finding can be challenging during the off-season when no tire tracks are present.
