Northern half of the iconic Alpine Loop.

This trail, combined with Cinnamon Pass, Trail #15, constitutes most of the famous Alpine Loop. It is an exhilarating trip for drivers of all experience levels. There are many mines and points of historical interest along the route. The east side of the trail follows Henson Creek where you’ll find excellent places to camp and fish.

Trail Ratings Defined

The majority of the drive, coming down the east side of the pass, is easy. However, the west side, between Wpts. 01 and 02, is very steep, narrow and rocky in spots. Caution should be used at all times especially in wet weather. Novice backcountry drivers may be intimidated. Don’t drive if snow covered. You’ll want 4-wheel drive with low range gearing and high ground clearance. No seasonal closures except by weather.

Great news! This summer as a first time “trial”, the Alpine Loop can be ridden in its entirety on an unlicensed ATV. Yes, you can ride it through Lake City. There are firm restrictions on what roads can be ridden, so I would HIGHLY recommend looking at Lake City website for updates. I just rode my SxS through Lake City today to complete the Alpine Loop, no problem. The city will soon be voting on a referendum as to whether this trial should continue, so please be respectful.

A new law in Hinsdale County now allows unlicensed vehicles to legally ride on all county roads including through the town of Lake City. All riders must have a driver’s license and proof of insurance. Vehicles must be street legal.
