Overview

Remote route near Wyoming border follows old cattle trail.

Remote route near the Wyoming border follows what is believed to be an old cattle trail over the top of Elkhorn Mountain. Southern views from the top are impressive on a clear day. Beautiful fall color. A side road south of Waypoint 03 goes to the Elkhorn Mine where you’ll find interesting scattered mine equipment. Open seasonally from June 15 through December 1, weather permitting.

Trail Ratings Defined

Narrow, steep and rocky in places, with tight, overgrown vegetation on western half. Meadow east of Waypoint 05 is very muddy early in the summer. We winched out a truck that had been stuck 3 hours. We found many downed trees across trail in early July and barely got through. Best to carry a chain saw. No hard-core obstacles, but be prepared for surprises.
