Overview

Perhaps the best 4×4 trail in any national park.

A very popular, well-known trail that is extremely fun to drive. Passes through the beautiful Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. A park fee plus a day use permit is required to drive the trail. Obtain permit at recreation.gov/permits/4251904 or, in person at Needles Visitor Center. No ATVs or UTVs, even if licensed. No pets. Amazing network of hiking trails; don’t miss the Joint Trail.

Very steep and narrow in places. Extremely tight switchbacks require backing down and up short sections. Rock ledges require high ground clearance and 4-wheel drive. Skid plates and lockers are highly recommended. Not recommended for stock vehicles.

Just returned from an epic Elephant Hill adventure! Well-maintained within the park; challenging but doable trail throughout. Tried to get out to the south through "Bobby's Hole" but found that impassible, so definitely come back out Elephant Hill once you go in. The narrow section gave us about 2 inches of clearance on our 82" wide vehicle (with mirrors). If your vehicle is much wider than that, you won't make it through!
