Southern portion of the famous Alpine Loop

1 Review
Location Lake City, CO
Rating Moderate,
Length 30.7mi
Time 4hrs

Vehicle Types

Southern half of the iconic Alpine Loop.

This trail, combined with Engineer Pass (Trail #14), constitutes most of the famous Alpine Loop. The western half of the trip passes many historic points and climbs to outstanding views. Side trip up Wager Gulch takes you to Carson Ghost Town. Cinnamon Pass Road also accesses beautiful American Basin, one of the best places in the area for wildflowers. On the west side, staging is available across from Eureka Campground (see map); on the east side, at Waypoint 06. No seasonal closures except by weather.

Trail Ratings Defined

Most of this trail is easy; however, the western half is steep and rocky in a few places. The side trip up Wager Gulch is slightly more difficult. All roads, when dry, are suitable for any stock 4x4 SUV with moderate ground clearance. The side trip up American Basin (shown on map) is borderline difficult.

We did this this trail and Engineer Pass on a nice day on September 24, 2021. The leaves on the Quakies were yellow and oranges against the dark green pines and dark gray mountains. Beautiful! The views at 12,800 feet-spectacular! My totally stock 2000 Tacoma with a shell had no problem on these moderate rated trails This is my second time climbing mountains in my truck.
