Overview

Unusual OHV area climbs to rim of volcanic crater.

A unique experience traveling on volcanic ash. Once you are in the OHV area, drive anywhere you like throughout the 13,500+ acres. We describe a main route that takes you up high to the Double Crater with 360-degree views of Flagstaff and Elden Mountain. The start of the trail has plenty of space to camp with friends. non-street-legall vehicles are not allowed on F.S. 776 and parts of F.S. 777; however, they can travel anywhere else.

Moderate
Trail Ratings Defined

Mostly easy with rolling hills and two steep climbs to Double Crater. Loose gravelly ash is soft like sand and can quickly overheat engines. If you get stuck, air down tires and start in second gear for better traction. Some places are slow going due to significant whoops.

AZ Craig says

Just spent a couple hours in here on Sunday, October 27. Ford Bronco Raptor stock. It's an interesting place to explore and had more fun with my Bronco than I ever had with my 4Runner. I tried to follow most of the route in the book the best I could, but never found a good place to get up Double Crater. I probably could have made it but was a touch worried about getting dug into the cinders as I was running solo and did not have traction boards with me (and Bronco Raptors weigh almost 6000 pounds). It's probably worth checking out at least once, but after a few trips here I honestly think the area is best for smaller vehicles like UTVs, ATVs, and dirt bikes where you can really just blast around and explore everything.
