Overview

Leaves “Animas Forks Ghost Town” and climbs to California Pass.

East end of trail starts at historic Animas Forks Ghost Town, gateway to the Alpine Loop. A remote, memorable drive with many well-preserved mine buildings. Awesome views. Trails not passable in winter.

Ran this trail and this is a great trail especially if you combine it with other trails to form a day trip. Make sure to get out at the top of the pass and take in the views. One of my favorite trail in the Silverton area.

Jeff Bouton - Fruita, CO says

This is a great trail for exploring the San Juan Mountains above tree line. It also offers a lot of interesting side trails, such as the Picayune and Placer Gulches, and can be extended to Hurricane Pass and Cork Screw Gulch, which are all easy trails with great views and a lot of historic old mines.
