Overview

Difficult backroad traverses large expanse of San Rafael Swell.

A rugged and beautiful trail, wide enough for Jeeps, but more often used for ATVs and UTVs. You can loop back to the start via difficult 858 or exit on EM6761 to connect with EM1012. This way back is a long 25-mile trip, but the drive goes quickly because the road is wide and smooth. To reach the start of Behind the Reef, you’ll pass through a popular recreation area surrounding Temple Mountain. It features great camping, vault toilets, many fun side roads for ATVs and UTVs and even some Indian rock art (look for large pipe sticking up on right 0.5 miles after first large staging area.

Trail Ratings Defined

One of the toughest spots is right at the start. After that, lots of steep, narrow, rocky and tippy sections interspersed with easy and moderate scenic roads. Not for wide vehicles.
