Relaxing forest drive near Hungry Valley.

A relaxing forest drive adjacent to Hungry Valley State Recreation Area. Escape the noise and dust for a little quiet time away from the crowds. Climb above 7,000 feet to cooler temperatures in the summer. Secluded camping. Two fun hiking trails into Sespe Wilderness. See how forest has recovered from devastating Day Fire in 2006. Green-sticker vehicles allowed after pavement ends 8 miles from start.

Hungry Valley and likely most forest access that depends on it is closed. It was devastated by fire in summer 2024. Check with the state parks website for details.

chose this as my first ever trail based on the recommendation from the book. in a stock 1989 4runner. first 6 miles are on potholed paved road. right before the piru creek crossing is a decent dip that would catch any small stock suv out. (im really glad my brother didnt follow me in his rav4). after the creek crossing though is 2 miles of weirdly smooth asphalt that seems like the Disney California adventure version of offroading, from there it gets info a more traditional trail. only had to use 4L once, and im sure a more experienced driver or a more torquey rig wouldn't have needed it. the trail is a bit long for a first time out. about 3/4 of the way I had gotten what i needed out of it and the decent felt more like work than adventure. i'd say either don't do the whole trail, or plan to camp or at least BBQ and make it a full day. views are great! elevation made it cool and breezy even in august.
