Route follows the old railroad bed of the Switzerland Trail Railway. Enjoy broad vistas and stunning fall color. The Fourmile Fire threatened the area in 2010, but stopped just short of the trail. These roads feel like forest roads as you drive them, but they are actually county roads. Technically, county roads do not allow unlicensed vehicles, but we saw ATVs and dirt bikes everywhere. Law enforcement could crack down at any time; that’s why we can’t recommend this route for unlicensed vehicles. Open all year, weather permitting.

Trail conditions haven’t changed much, but more side roads are barricaded. Also, when I reached the end of the trail, I decided to continue driving on a trail immediately across County Road 52. This turned out to be a short, but fun, trail numbered C.R. 93. It has a difficult optional side hill climb people are calling “Cliff Hanger 2.0.” This trail will be included in the next edition of this book.
