Vehicle Types

Overview

See “Thelma & Louise Point” on way to “Shafer Switchbacks.”

A little-known area with plenty to see and explore. The trail drops into Pole Spring Canyon, then climbs a narrow twisting road to Hideout Mesa. From there it’s an easy drive back down to the highway after passing by a mine. Dispersed camping is allowed on many of the Forest Service roads; check the latest MVUM.

David Frazer says

Easy trail, scenic. But if you don't like narrow shelf roads then the switchbacks near the end are somewhat terrifying. The road is wide, and yes its "easy" but if heights bother you then you might think twice. You will be going up a sheer cliff that's so vertical you cannot figure how they cut the road in the side of this cliff.
