Enjoy this lesser-known back way to the top of Rocky Mountain National Park. See photogenic Chasm Falls and enjoy winding switchbacks above timberline. For more details, purchase copy of “Guide to Old Fall River Road” at trail head dispenser or visitor centers. Fee required to enter park, but no additional fee for Old Fall River Road. Enjoy unique shopping and dining in beautiful Estes Park, where elk grazing along streets are a common sight in early morning. Old Fall River Road typically opens July 4th and closes in the fall with the first heavy snow, usually sometime in October. Call ahead to check status.

I re-drove this trail and the road hasn’t changed at all, but when I got to the parking lot at the Alpine Visitor Center at the top, the traffic in the lot was total gridlock. People trying to get into the lot from Trailridge Road were blocking people trying to get out. I sat there for 45 minutes before things finally got moving.
