Black Dragon Canyon

Impressive canyon trail with a winged monster.

Most tourists enter on the east end of the trail for easy access to the Black Dragon pictograph art panel. Our route, which starts on the west end, is more challenging and interesting for OHVers. In addition, this route has more camp spots and side roads to explore. Staging is available on both ends of the trail, but the easiest access is from I-70 at exit 131 (see this exit on map for trail #83).

Mostly easy, flat, hard-packed dirt, except in the wash that has large embedded rock and narrow sections. An experienced driver with a short wheel-based, high-clearance SUV should be able to get through by taking it slow. Do not travel into the area unless you are familiar with desert travel. Don’t go if heavy rain is forecast.
