The highlight of this route is a well-loved swimming hole beneath the Colfax-Foresthill Suspension Bridge. Our scenic approach takes you along a paved road through the historic town of Iowa Hill, followed by a narrow, winding dirt road through the forest. Bring a picnic lunch and an inner tube to enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the American River within the Auburn State Recreation Area (fee required). This route is open to street-legal vehicles only. To go directly to the swimming hole, use reverse directions. Area gets busy on summer weekends.
